I am a music journalist, interested in "eccentric" music (that is, away from the "mainstream"). I am curious by nature. I like to find out things on the way, to discover sounds and subjects that are new to me. And then report on them.
Since 1989 I have worked for newspapers in the south of the Netherlands, covering a wide variety of musical genres, from jazz and improv to contemporary composed music and sound art. From 2009 to 2011 I covered world music in reviews and articles for Dutch national broadsheet newspaper NRC Handelsblad.
Other magazines publishing my work are/were Dutch world music magazines Wereldmuziek, New Folk Sounds, Beyond and Mixed; Musicworks from Canada (devoted to exploratory music and sound work); Leonardo Music Journal (music and electronic media); and the Belgian-Dutch magazine Gonzo (circus), which covers left field music.
For Eindhovens Dagblad I covered the program of exhibitions and performances at Het Apollohuis (now defunct venue for innovative art and music in Eindhoven) from 1989 through 1997.
In 1993 Het Apollohuis published my book Interviews With Sound Artists.
For Dutch broadcasting organisation VPRO I made radio programs in their weekly world music series De Wandelende Tak about a variety of topics (Georgian singing, numbers, the voice, spoken word, the organ, 1991-2009).
For VPRO's audio art/radiophonic series Cafe Sonore I co-produced with Armeno Alberts features on 'Wind', 'Bird Song' and 'Metal' (the latter four hours without interruption). A similar broadcast about numbers in music was considered, but never realized because Dutch radio thinks the attention span of their audience is only longer than two minutes when sports are involved.
I also do public presentations and readings, for Holland Festival, among others. Topics of my presentations included the work of Robert Ashley and the aesthetic of nature sounds.
