
Naast het overschot van bands die overduidelijk The Cure willen zijn, zijn er ook muzikanten die wat creatiever uit de jaren 1980 plunderen. Het geluidsbeeld op Destroyers nieuwe album ‘Ken’ roept associaties op met de latere Roxy Music en zelfs met Sade, terwijl de zang sterk doet denken aan die heerlijk droogkloterige Lloyd Cole. Dat levert gecroonde, romantische pareltjes op als opener ‘Sky’s Grey’, en spannende eighties-pop als ‘Tinseltown Swimming In Blood’. Het geheel is eerder neo-New Romantics dan hoekige postpunk en dat is verfrissend. Helaas is niet alles even geslaagd waardoor ‘Ken’ net geen echte topper wordt, maar een fraaie plaat is het zeker.
